Assault on Art Precinct 13

Alex John / Craig McClure / Joseph Scott / Mark Braunias

  • 2 Oct - 22 Oct, 2014

This exhibition is a site responsive, drawing exhibition where emerging artists (McClure, John, Scott) are led by established artist Mark Braunias, in a somewhat satirical stand against the gentrification of “their turf”. Braunias has noticed the identification of Alexandra Street as Hamilton’s new ‘Art Precinct’ with its galleries, artist run spaces and the newly opened Wintec, School of Media Arts facilities.

Drawing links to the 1976 cult film ‘Assault on Precinct 13’, in which the characters are forced to seek shelter in an abandoned police station from the overwhelming numbers of a seemingly unstoppable street gang. In a similar fashion the artists take shelter and  work simultaneously on site over 6 days, generating an installation of drawings, ready-mades and transformative junk/materials as a defensive action.
