Artist Nell in Conversation with Rhana Devenport

Artist Nell in Conversation with Rhana Devenport

An international cross-disciplinary artist from a small-town background, Nell grew up in Maitland, New South Wales, where she picked up the bogan aesthetic and inner rock chick that influences her work before heading off to art school in Sydney. From there, she studied in California and Paris, developed a commitment to her art that looks at birth, sex, death and combinations of contemporary and religious iconography, recreated AC/DC’s iconic ‘It’s a Long Way to the Top’ video in a performance, collaborated with fashion label Romance Was Born, took Buddhist vows, and was picked up by the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery ̶ one of Australia’s most high profile galleries.

She’s always about the art, candidly upfront and a bit quirky, so expect Nell’s interview with Auckland Art gallery Director Rhana Devenport to be full of insights into not only her practice, but her deep love of rock ‘n’ roll and Colin McCahon.

Rhana curated Lisa Reihana’s project In Pursuit of Venus [infected] for the Auckland Art Gallery in 2015, and was curator of the New Zealand Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale.
