Leonie Hayden

3:00–4:00pm Monday 8 August, 2016

Events Room 01 / Gallagher Hub / Wintec

Leonie Hayden is the editor of Mana magazine - a current affairs, culture and lifestyle magazine for Māori.

The two role most commonly played by Māori in the media are the violent criminal or the sage mystic.  The reality is that Modern Māori are as complex and diverse a group as any other.  Media shapes how we see the world, and how we view cultures that are not our own.  It’s important that what we see, hear and read in the media is a fair representation.

Leonie will be talking about representation of Māori in the media, the distinctions between Māori and mainstream media and why it’s important to understand both, as well as the historical context for the marginalisation of the Māori voice in media.
